If you are in the market to replace your old cornices, or maybe you are building a new house and looking for information on ceiling cornice. The internet is probably the best place to find what you are looking for. Ceiling cornices is the moulding that runs along the line where the wall and ceiling meet. Cornices is one of those finishes that make a huge difference in a house.

The materials that are used to manufacture ceiling cornice have changed a bit since the old days. You get polystyrene cornices, polyurethane ceiling cornice and foam ceiling cornice. The supply and popularity of the different types of cornices all depend on where you are located. You will have to go online and do a search on local supplier of cornice. Do different searches on polystyrene ceiling cornice and polyurethane ceiling cornices and see what is in the most supply of in your area.

There are basically two different types of polystyrene namely expanded polystyrene which is softer and more rough which is the cheaper of the two. The other one is called extruded polystyrene and it is more dense and harder and smoother than expanded polystyrene. Both these types of polystyrene can be cut with a hot wire machine to manufacture ceiling cornices mouldings. When polystyrene is cut on a hot wire machine the quality is not the best, but when painted most people are happy with the result.

A more upper class polystyrene cornices is the moulded ceiling cornices, which is moulded with a pattern to produce a ceiling cornices moulding that is smooth with a quality finish. This process is more expensive and the moulded ceiling cornice is more expensive in comparison to the cut ceiling cornices. The added benefit of moulded polystyrene cornices is that you can get cornices with patterns on them. With cut cornice you can only get profiles with no patterns on them.

Polyurethane ceiling cornices are in my opinoin the cream of the crop. Polyurethane is a hard and very smooth product. It is pressed therefore giving you profiles with patterns. Polyurethane ceiling cornice are the most expensive of the three types.

Now that you have some knowledge of the types of materials that ceiling cornice are made of, you will have to make a choice on what type of cornices you are going to use. You will probably base your decision on price, quality and availability. You can’t get cut expanded polystyrene ceiling cornices everywhere. Some places have minimum standards and cut expanded polystyrene cornices might be below a set building standard in some areas.

That being said it can always be sourced from where you can find it. Look for photos of expanded polystyrene cornice after they have been installed and painted, then only make a final decision.

Also one last point to remember when working with polystyrene is that only certain types of paints can be used to paint on them. Like water based and acrylic paints work great.
